Come on John...

If you have been following the news, John McCain reported his Q2 Fundraising at an abysmal $11 million. What is even more shocking is his remaining cash-on-hand - $2 million. His campaign manager is not taking a salary anymore, and his staff is being downsized by ~30%.

Here is what I beleive McCain's camp had in mind going into 2007:
1) He is the current "frontrunner" if the election were held in late 2006.
2) Hire all the political talent to deter other potential candidates.
3) Maintaining the status quo is more important that fundraising.

McCain had his campaign geared for a general election. The money simply wasn't there to support it. Poised as the frontrunner, it was assumed that the money would flow in.

Had he exceeded his Q1 fundraising, it would have been a much prettier picture. For Q3, it won't get any better, as Fred Thompson will soon be joining the race.

The advantage McCain has now is that any improvement he gets will be enormously positive since he has sinked so low.
